Friis After Feyenoord Defeat: I Believe I Will Stay at Sparta
Sparta Falls Short Against Feyenoord Despite Promising Moments
Rotterdam – Despite flashes of brilliance, Sparta Prague suffered another defeat in the champions League, falling 3-1 to Feyenoord.
“Feyenoord has a squad that’s three and a half times more expensive,” lamented Sparta coach Brian Friis. “But they weren’t three and a half times better. We simply gifted them easy goals. Their individual quality shone through during those moments.”
Anis Hádž-Músa’s stunning left-footed strike for Feyenoord’s third goal was a prime example. The textbook finish into the far corner showcased the Dutch side’s individual brilliance. However, by that point, Sparta was already battling an uphill climb.
A disastrous ten-minute spell midway through the first half saw Sparta concede two rapid goals, effectively dashing their hopes of a comeback.
“it’s a shame,” Friis said. ”We started quite well, created a few chances. Then, boom, boom. We gave them two cheap goals. In the Champions League, it’s incredibly difficult to come back from that. We found ourselves in a tough situation.”
Sparta briefly reignited hope with a goal from Albian Rrahmani just before halftime, but they couldn’t close the gap further. The crucial second goal, which would have brought them within striking distance, never materialized.
“I told the boys at halftime to keep their heads up,” Friis reflected. “I was pleased that in certain phases of the game, we showed we could match them. But it wasn’t enough. We fell behind far too early.”
The loss leaves Sparta with an uphill battle in the Champions League group stage.
