From Anesthesiologist to Candlemaker: Liz Lehman’s Inspiring Career Pivot

For nearly 20 years, Liz Lehman worked as an anesthesiologist. She focused on patient care and problem-solving. In 2017, her life changed after a serious injury. At 56, she shifted her focus to candlemaking, which reminded her of her childhood. This new hobby soon became a side business.

In 2019, Lehman launched her wellness brand, Aluminate Life, after receiving 26,000 glass jars at her home in Lutherville, Baltimore County. Today, her products are sold in various day spas and shops across the country. Lehman’s journey showcases that it’s possible to change careers, no matter your age.

Lehman emphasizes the importance of listening to your body. After her injury, she explored candlemaking while recovering. Initially, she operated from her kitchen with her husband helping. As her business grew, she reduced her hours in anesthesia. However, she developed pain in her hands, which required multiple surgeries.

Lehman reflects on how her perspective on healing evolved. Although she followed a traditional medical path, she now reaches more people through her candles. Her scientific background helped her prioritize using safe, natural ingredients.

Looking forward, Lehman plans to expand Aluminate Life, including products for pets that address their anxiety and discomfort. She hopes to inspire others to embrace change, showing that it’s never too late to pursue new avenues in life.
