From Bank to Home: The Doran Family’s Unique Transformation Journey in Templemore
Johnny and Deirdre Doran were thrilled to buy their first home with a mortgage from the Bank of Ireland in Templemore, Co Tipperary. After 22 years and three children, they were surprised to find that the bank would become their next home.
“We wanted to move closer to everything,” Johnny said. “Then the bank came up for sale.” Johnny, a self-employed physical therapist, and Deirdre envisioned using the building for his practice and for their family.
Deirdre added, “We had been living out in the country and felt it was time for change, especially for the kids.” The Dorans saw potential in the building, a landmark in the town dating back to about 1860.
The building, which had housed a bank manager and their family, featured a large central location with impressive architecture. When the Bank of Ireland closed its doors in October 2021, it was listed for €245,000. Many were interested, but the Dorans presented a clear plan. They proposed using the ground floor for Johnny’s business and moving their family upstairs.
Buying the bank felt risky. “It is such a big building with a big personality,” Johnny said. Its protected status meant that they had to be cautious with any renovations.
On the day they dropped their daughter off for her first year at university, the couple received the keys to their new home. “It felt magical,” Deirdre said. They quickly began removing the security bars on the windows, which made the space feel more inviting.
Transforming the bank into a family home was a significant project. The couple had to address various issues like leaks and dampness. They set to work on insulation and preservation of key features like original doors and fireplaces.
The result of their efforts is a spacious four-bedroom home with a bright kitchen and cozy dining room. They maintained the charm of the old bank and incorporated modern elements, like a wellness hub on the ground floor featuring classes for locals, including yoga and workout sessions.
One special feature is the old bank vault, which now serves as a salt therapy room. In the backyard, they have a large garden with a sauna and plans for a tranquility garden crafted by Johnny’s uncle.
Community support poured in after their move. “People were excited for us, and they wanted to see the new home,” Deirdre shared. The family has embraced life in town, enjoying the balance between a vibrant atmosphere and a peaceful garden.
Adjusting to town life was initially tough for their children, but now they appreciate the independence that comes from living in a bustling area. The family is proud of their investment in both their home and the community, as they transformed the building into a meaningful space for themselves and others.
