From Court to ICU: The Hidden Dangers of a Common Cold That Almost Claimed a Teen’s Life

November 6, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Sports

A freshman boy caught a cold after playing basketball and almost died because he didn’t pay attention! Doctors are also afraid of the high incidence and extremely high mortality rate in autumn and winter

The weather is getting colder and colder, and more and more people are getting colds. Recently, Xiao Zheng, an 18-year-old freshman boy, came to the emergency department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine.

Three days ago, Xiao Zheng played a game of basketball with his classmates late at night. After sweating a lot, he started to have a fever and cough that night. He thought he caught a cold due to the cold wind after sweating. After taking some antipyretics and anti-cold Chinese patent medicines, he insisted on going to class as usual.

But as a few days passed, his body temperature repeatedly hovered at 39°C. After finally coming down, his overall condition was very bad.

“Although the fever has subsided, I feel that my condition has not been relieved, but has worsened. I have pain all over my body, palpitations, and can’t sleep at night. I also have chest tightness from time to time.” Xiao Zheng tossed and turned in the dormitory, and was dragged to the emergency department by his roommates.

The emergency doctor who treated him felt that it was not just a common cold, so he conducted some detailed examinations and tests. The results made the doctor worried – the electrocardiogram showed that Xiao Zheng had sinus tachycardia, and the myocardial damage markers were close to the normal value. Thousand times, the test results of heart function, liver and kidney function showed that he had certain damage to multiple organs. He was diagnosed with “acute myocarditis”. If it was delayed any longer, it would become fulminant myocarditis, and the risk of malignant arrhythmia or even sudden death would be extremely high.

This conclusion made the medical staff feel threatened. Experts from the emergency department of cardiology rushed immediately and actively assisted in diagnosis and treatment. They provided Xiao Zheng with symptomatic support such as nourishing his heart muscle. Fortunately, Xiao Zheng received medical treatment in time and avoided further worsening of the condition. Subsequently, the doctor recommended that Xiao Zheng be transferred to the cardiology ward for continued treatment.

When he heard that he was going to be hospitalized, Xiao Zheng, who had not yet realized the seriousness of the problem, was very resistant and wanted to be discharged quickly so as not to delay his studies. After experts from the emergency department and cardiology patiently explained the dangers of the disease and follow-up treatment plans from a medical perspective, Xiao Zheng agreed to be hospitalized.

Chief physician Lu Yuanqiang, director of the emergency department of Qingchun Campus of the First Hospital of Zhejiang University, said that fulminant myocarditis, also known as acute severe viral myocarditis, is the most serious type of myocarditis. “Its main characteristics are that it has an acute onset and rapidly progresses in hours. Patients will soon develop heart failure and severe arrhythmia, and may be accompanied by respiratory failure and multi-organ failure such as liver and kidney function. The mortality rate in the early stage is extremely high. ” Director Lu said that many people did not realize how dangerous it is. Previously, the emergency department had received many cases of fulminant myocarditis patients who thought they were colds and delayed the treatment for too long.

Professor Guo Xiaogang, director of the Department of Cardiology at the First Hospital of Zhejiang University, emphasized that for fulminant myocarditis, prevention is better than treatment. Late autumn has arrived, and the temperature difference between day and night is large. Director Lu Yuanqiang also reminds everyone not to take colds lightly. If you accidentally catch a cold and it lingers, you must seek medical treatment as soon as possible.
