From Crypto Crusader to Capitol Hill: XRP-Backed Lawyer Deaton Throws Hat into Senate Ring
Pro-Cryptocurrency Lawyer John Deaton Wins Massachusetts Republican Primary Nomination for U.S. Senate
John Deaton, a pro-cryptocurrency lawyer and avid supporter of Ripple (XRP), has secured the Massachusetts Republican primary nomination for the U.S. Senate. Deaton, a former Marine, will face off against Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren in the November election.
Deaton’s victory was announced after he defeated engineer Bob Antonellis and Quincy City Council President Ian Cain, securing 64% of the vote with 43% of the Massachusetts statewide votes counted, according to the Iowa Post.
Deaton will challenge Warren, a two-time Senate incumbent, who won more than 60% of the vote in 2018. Warren is seeking a third term.
Notably, Deaton’s victory speech avoided specific mentions of virtual currencies, despite his campaign receiving support from prominent figures in the crypto industry, including the Winklevoss twins and executives from fintech company Ripple.
The Commonwealth Unity Fund, a crypto-focused political action committee (PAC), provided over $1 million in support of Deaton’s campaign in Massachusetts. Key backers include Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen, CEO Brad Garlinghouse, Gemini founders Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, Skybridge Capital founder Anthony Scaramucci, Cardano co-founder Charles Hoskinson, and Kraken co-founder Jesse Powell.
According to Federal Election Commission records, Deaton raised approximately $1.7 million for his Senate campaign as of July 31.
