From Deadpool to Green Lantern: The Marvel Miss That Led Kyle Chandler to DC Stardom

From Deadpool to Green Lantern: The Marvel Miss That Led Kyle Chandler to DC Stardom

September 24, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Entertainment

It’s been reported that just about everyone in Hollywood has been in, or at least is in, a superhero movie. It’s just the latest big trend to hire everyone who’s in a union. If you are not a VFX worker), just as the crime drama hired every actor who later went on to become a huge success. Whether it’s a famous and legendary actor like Harrison Ford or an indie director like Ryan Coogler, no one is safe from the superhero movie industry complex.

The latest popular actor to join the superhero franchise is Kyle Chandler, the ultimate dad actor. Played Hal Jordan in the Green Lantern TV series Part of James Gunn’s early DC Universe, Chandler reportedly takes on the mantle of the Power Ring and fights for the Green Lantern Corps. A rumored contender for the role, Josh Brolin. The Green Lantern TV show is set in the same vein as “True Detective,” but the cops have superpowers and report to an alien overlord.

Chandler was reportedly in talks to join another superhero franchise, the “Deadpool” film, before joining DC. labDirector Tim Miller wanted Chandler to play Cable, a cybernetic mutant soldier from the future, in “Deadpool 2.” Unfortunately, Ryan Reynolds had a new contract for the sequel, so the actor had his approval on the casting decision, and Chandler wasn’t the guy Reynolds was looking for, and the role, oddly enough, went to Josh Brolin. That’s right, Chandler finally defeated Brolin and won the second round of this hypothetical feud we just made up.

When one door closes…

20th Century Fox

You could argue that everyone wins this way. It’s funny that Kyle Chandler didn’t reprise his role as Cable in “Deadpool 2,” but it was definitely a downgrade from the first film. Chandler had a fantastic run of movies between 2018 and 2019. In those two years, Chandler starred in “Game Night,” “First Man,” and the criminally underrated “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (a great film with some of the best non-Japanese music ever for a “Godzilla” movie, thanks to composer Bear McCreary).

Before Josh Brolin took on the role of Cable, Randy Orton, aka The Viper, also auditioned for the role. That means there’s an alternate universe where he took on that role. Maybe in that universe, Chandler became a professional wrestler.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter who plays Cable, because it seems like it was a one-time role. Characters who do not appear in “Deadpool and Wolverine.” Cable was left out because the third “Deadpool” film took a more nostalgic approach and served as a continuation and conclusion to the 20th Century Fox films rather than a “Deadpool” film. But he will probably return in “Avengers: Secret Wars.”
