From Favela to Bobsled: Davidson de Souza’s Inspiring Journey to Compete for Canada
Davidson de Souza grew up in a favela near Sao Paulo, Brazil. He first tried bobsledding at Calgary’s WinSport facility over a decade ago. The rush of sliding down the ice left him exhilarated. “It was pure adrenaline,” he recalled. From that moment, he knew he wanted to pursue the sport.
De Souza’s journey has been challenging. He was raised by a single mother and had to work from a young age to help support his family. At 12, he joined a local track program for free meals. He excelled in discus and javelin and was later introduced to bobsledding.
While training with the Brazilian bobsled team, de Souza fell in love with the sport and Canada. He made the Brazilian four-man bobsled team for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. Watching Canadian athletes inspired him. After the Olympics, he sold his belongings and moved to Canada to compete for the Canadian team.
Initially, he faced challenges, including language barriers and culture shock. He took a break from the sport to focus on his family after becoming a father. However, the desire to compete never faded. In 2021, he returned to bobsledding when his children were old enough to understand his passion.
What challenges did Davidson de Souza face while transitioning from Brazil to Canada for bobsledding?
