Gail and Greg Warner’s Move to Spain: A Journey of Change
Gail and Greg Warner, originally from the United States, sought a new life in search of sunshine. Based in Florida, they traveled many countries together and often dreamed of living abroad. Their journey began seriously when they realized they could retire early with some lifestyle changes.
Their beloved dog, Beau, was a concern. They hesitated, fearing the move might be too stressful for him. However, by 2017, they discovered they could bring him along with proper arrangements. After six months of planning, they decided to relocate.
The couple narrowed their options to Singapore and Spain, eventually choosing Spain for its proximity to the US, making travel easier for Beau, who had heart issues. After a trip to Valencia, to test the environment, they arranged a non-lucrative visa to live in Spain without working. Initially, they planned to move in December 2018 but expedited their plans after advice from a friendly embassy staff member. They quickly sold their home, cars, and most possessions and set up a rental in Valencia.
In July 2018, they moved to Valencia with Beau, smoothly settling into their new two-bedroom apartment. They found their surroundings welcoming and soon became familiar with local grocery stores and markets. They hired a Spanish-speaking friend to help with daily tasks, including setting up their bank account, which proved a challenge due to language barriers.
Life in Spain was different from what they had known. Gail admired the relaxed attitude of their neighbors, who seemed more focused on enjoying life than on material possessions. She felt inspired by how the local community appreciated beauty and contentment. The couple explored friendships, both with locals and other expats, and credited Beau for many connections.
Though adjusting to Spain came with challenges—such as later meal times and shops closing for siesta—they embraced their new lifestyle. The health care system impressed them with its quality and affordability, a stark contrast to what they had experienced back in the US.
Beau passed away in 2022, but the couple reflected on their gratitude for moving with him. They wished they had made the decision to relocate earlier. The couple values their life in Spain, feeling more at home than ever. After living in Valencia for five years, they moved to Málaga City in the Costa del Sol.
As they settled into their new life, they became more involved in the community. The recent flooding in eastern Spain sparked a desire to volunteer and help others. Their advice for those considering a move: fully embrace the new culture and experiences. They expressed regret only for not making the move sooner and continue to enjoy their vibrant life in Spain.
