From Glory to Goodbye: How the Corona Pandemic Tore Weiler Away from Al-Ahly
René Weiler Opens Up About Leaving Al-Ahli Club
Former Al-Ahli club coach René Weiler has shared his thoughts on leaving the team, emphasizing that the COVID-19 pandemic played a significant role in his decision to depart.
In an interview with ”mbc Egypt” channel, Weiler stated, “My goal was to help Al-Ahly develop technically and play attractive football, which is every coach’s objective – to delight the fans.”
Weiler prefers a direct and attacking style of play, focusing on creating scoring opportunities rather than solely relying on possession. He believes this approach is more engaging for fans.
“I prioritized securing big wins and not becoming complacent after scoring a goal,” he explained.
Weiler’s Admiration for Al-Ahli’s Passionate Fans
Weiler expressed his admiration for the massive support Al-Ahli receives, saying, “No other club in the world has such a large following, which sets Al-Ahli apart.”
A Reserved Personality with a Focus on Player Development
Weiler described himself as a reserved individual who prefers to work behind the scenes, focusing on player development rather than seeking fame.
“I was delighted with the atmosphere within the club and enjoyed collaborating with the Al-Ahly players,” he said.
A Difficult Decision: The Case of Hossam Ashour
Weiler reflected on the challenging decision to part ways with former team player Hossam Ashour, citing Ashour’s advanced age and the need to implement his playing style. “Some tough decisions had to be made, especially regarding the team’s lineup.”
Still Following Al-Ahli’s Progress
Weiler concluded by stating that he continues to follow Al-Ahli’s results and the progress of the current coach, Marcel Köhler.
