Choi Kang-hee‘s Gap Year: From Actress to Part-Time Worker
Actress Choi Kang-hee (47) recently shared her experience of taking a gap year from acting and working several part-time jobs, including washing dishes at a restaurant and working as a housekeeper.
Choi Kang-hee appeared as a lecturer on the YouTube channel ‘Sebasi Lecture’, where she shared her story of quitting acting and finding herself. She explained that she quit acting due to the heavy and uncomfortable position of being a celebrity, and the fear of facing misunderstandings or injustices.
Choi Kang-hee confessed that she was afraid that she had not developed herself outside of acting, and had not studied properly since graduating from high school. She decided to try working part-time to gain new experiences and skills.
She worked part-time washing dishes at a meat restaurant at Juan Station in Incheon, and also worked as a housekeeper at the homes of close fellow celebrities. Choi Kang-hee earned about 1.6 million won a month from her part-time job, which covered her utility bills, insurance premiums, and simple living expenses.
During her gap year, Choi Kang-hee also attended a writing academy and editing academy, and explored other opportunities. She realized that people were not seriously interested in her, and decided to follow her own path.
Netizens responded positively to Choi Kang-hee’s honest lecture, saying it gave them comfort and courage. Choi Kang-hee debuted in 1995 and continued her active acting career until she took a hiatus for about 3 years. She has since opened a YouTube channel, ’I, too, Choi Kang-hee’, where she shares her experiences of various jobs.
