On August 27, the Zhuxi Court pronounced a verdict on the case of illegal hunting by Xiao A and Xiao B, sentencing them to fixed-term imprisonment and ordering them to pay 25,000 yuan in compensation for ecological environmental damage.
Xiao A and Xiao B are father and son. From December 1, 2023 to February 5, 2024, without obtaining hunting permits, they set 9 traps in a mountain forest in a village in Hezhen, Zhuxi County, and captured 8 wild animals, including 8 muntjacs and 2 porcupines, for their own consumption and sale, earning a profit of 4,460 yuan.

Sentenced to pay 25,000 yuan in compensation
On June 5, 2024, the Zhuxi County Procuratorate commissioned the Zhuxi County Forestry Bureau to appraise the value of the wild animal resources lost by Xiao and his son. After appraisal, the value of the muntjac was 3,000 yuan each, the value of the porcupine was 500 yuan each, and the loss of wild animal resources lost by Xiao and his son was 25,000 yuan.
During the trial, Xiao and his son confessed to the criminal facts alleged by the public prosecution agency, had no objection to the accompanying civil lawsuit requests, expressed their willingness to bear the compensation costs for damage to wildlife resources, pleaded guilty and accepted punishment in court, and asked the court to impose a lighter sentence.

Zhuxi Court sentenced the defendant Xiao A to nine months in prison, suspended for one year and six months, and Xiao B to six months in prison, suspended for one year, for the crime of illegal hunting. The court also confiscated the tools used in the crime, confiscated the illegal proceeds of RMB 4,460 and turned them over to the state treasury, and ordered Xiao A and Xiao B to pay RMB 25,000 in compensation for ecological damage.
