Edmonton Man’s Malaria Diagnosis in Africa Highlights Importance of Travel Insurance

Colin Crane, a freelancer from Edmonton, embarked on a business trip to Africa in June, but his journey took an unexpected turn when he was admitted to a hospital a few weeks later.

Crane experienced difficulty sleeping, breathing, and eating, which led to a malaria diagnosis after undergoing blood tests. According to Linda Wepila, chief nursing officer at the hospital where Crane was treated, “If you get malaria and don’t get treatment in time, your organs start to stop working due to complications.”

Colin Crane’s Malaria Diagnosis in Africa

Crane’s condition worsened, and he developed kidney problems, requiring dialysis. Initially expected to stay in the hospital for a few days, he ended up in a coma for six weeks.

The medical bills added up to $30,000, with the hospital staff warning that the costs would increase if he stayed longer. Crane had not purchased travel insurance, assuming that his previous problem-free trips to Africa would be a guarantee of a smooth journey.

Martin Firestone, a travel expert, emphasizes the importance of getting travel insurance, stating that without medical insurance while traveling abroad, one may not receive the necessary help in the event of a sudden health problem.

Crane’s experience serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the importance of being prepared for unexpected medical emergencies while traveling abroad.

Travelers can learn from Crane’s experience and take necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.
