Ahmedabad Emerges as Spacetech Startup Hub
Updated June 04, 2025
Ahmedabad is rapidly becoming a spacetech startup hub, propelled by the collaborative efforts of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), IN-SPACe, and IIMA Ventures. The city’s legacy, tracing back to Vikram sarabhai’s Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), now supports a new generation of spacetech entrepreneurs, many of whom are former ISRO scientists.
The presence of ISRO’s Space Applications center, IN-SPACe headquarters, and IIMA Ventures creates a robust ecosystem for space innovation. Startups such as PierSight,SatLeo Labs, and Orbitt Space are capitalizing on this infrastructure to develop advanced satellite technologies.
Thes technologies include Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) for maritime surveillance, thermal imaging satellites for commercial applications, and air-breathing electric propulsion systems for ultra-low Earth orbit (ULEO) missions.
PierSight is developing a SAR-enabled satellite constellation for continuous maritime surveillance, planning to launch 32 satellites by 2028.Orbitt Space, founded by former ISRO scientists, focuses on ULEO propulsion technology, utilizing atmospheric gases as propellant to extend satellite lifespans. SatLeo Labs secured $3.3 million to advance thermal imaging payloads, aiming to transform commercial space applications.
IN-SPACe facilitates testing, regulatory approvals, and funding for startups. IIMA ventures incubates many of these companies, offering mentorship and investment. Ahmedabad’s scientific heritage, regulatory support, and entrepreneurial drive are positioning it as a key player in India’s commercial space sector.
Pune, Maharashtra, is also emerging as a space-tech research hub, with startups focusing on satellite propulsion systems. Assam, in northeast India, is now home to the Assam State Space Application Centre (ASSAC), concentrating on remote sensing and GIS applications. Assam also boasts AssamSat, its first satellite, developed with ISRO.
India is increasing its space activities, planning 30 missions for 2024-2025, including launches by Skyroot Aerospace and Agnikul Cosmos.
What’s next
Ahmedabad’s continued growth as a spacetech startup hub will likely attract further investment and innovation, solidifying its role in India’s expanding space program.
