The consolidation of Ireland’s fruit and vegetable supply chain has resulted in the establishment of the world’s largest fresh produce business, marking a significant shift from a fragmented local market to a centralized global operation.

In 2021, the merger of Dublin-headquartered Total Produce, a spin-off of the Irish fruit company Fyffes, and the United States-based Dole Foods created a new entity that is double the size of its nearest global competitor. The resulting company, Dole plc, was incorporated in Dublin and maintains a listing in the United States.

The growth of this sector has been defined by a transition away from a marketplace once dominated by a multitude of small, family-run growers. According to Ger Murphy, the Irish retail channel director for Dole, the industry has undergone a journey of consolidation to adapt to a rapidly changing marketplace characterized by shifting consumer tastes and the necessity for year-round foreign imports.

This structural transformation began in the late 20th century, driven largely by the evolution of the retail sector. Previously, smaller fruit and vegetable companies supplied a limited number of stores within their immediate localities.

The arrival of Tesco in the 1990s served as a catalyst for this change, as the retailer introduced a model based on central distribution. This shift in retail sophistication forced other market participants to follow suit, leading to the decline of the fragmented supply model in favor of larger, more integrated distributors.

The main driver was the fact that the retailers themselves had been fragmented – all of those smaller fruit and veg companies were supplying a number of stores in their locality. That’s how that market worked in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. Retailers got more sophisticated. Tesco arrived here in the ’90s, they came with central distribution in mind and all the rest followed.

One of the most prominent outcomes of this industrial consolidation over the past 30 years has been the year-round availability of fruit and vegetables on Irish supermarket shelves. While the composition of the typical shopping basket has remained relatively consistent across generations, the consistency of supply has been fundamentally transformed by the ability to integrate global imports with domestic production.

The scale of current operations means that while the companies and individuals behind many of the brands remain unknown to the general public, they manage a vast volume of the produce consumed within the Irish market.
