The Wisconsin Badgers men’s hockey team has secured a place in the Frozen Four, marking the program’s first appearance in the national semifinals since 2010.
This achievement follows a period of significant struggle for the program, which finished the 2024-2025 season with a record of 13-21-3. The turnaround has been attributed to a rigorous process of self-examination and adjustment led by head coach Mike Hastings.
Overcoming Previous Struggles
Following the difficult 2024-2025 campaign, coach Mike Hastings implemented what has been described as an autopsy of the team’s failures. This internal review was designed to identify the root causes of the 13-21-3 record and establish a blueprint for recovery.
The current success is the result of these adjustments, as the team transitioned from a struggling squad into a contender capable of reaching the final stages of the NCAA tournament.
The Impact of Quinn Finley
A central figure in the Badgers’ resurgence is junior wing Quinn Finley. A native of Suamico and a third-round draft pick of the New York Islanders, Finley has emerged as a primary offensive catalyst for the team.

Finley currently leads the Wisconsin Badgers in goal scoring with 17 goals and ranks as the team’s second-leading point producer with 33 points. His ability to find the back of the net has had a direct correlation with team success, as Wisconsin remains undefeated in all games during the 2025-2026 season in which Finley has scored a goal.
Beyond his offensive statistics, Finley has expanded his contributions to include playing on the penalty kill. This growth in his all-around game has been highlighted by coach Hastings.
You know what’s been great about him is embracing some of the hard. He’s as talented as they get. He can jump out of that rink with his speed.
Mike Hastings
Finley’s journey to the Frozen Four is personally significant. He recalled attending games at the Kohl Center as a child, sitting in the third deck and watching former Hobey Baker Award winner Cole Caufield before choosing to attend the home-state university himself.
Defensive Stability and Leadership
While Finley has led the attack, the Badgers’ defensive unit has also seen a marked improvement. Senior right-shot defenseman Dexheimer has provided a steady presence on the back end throughout the season.
Dexheimer has rebounded offensively, leading all Wisconsin blueliners with 27 points in 37 games, consisting of seven goals and 20 assists. His development has been a multi-year process, as he was a freshman during the program’s coaching change in 2023.
The combined efforts of the offensive leaders and a stabilizing defense have allowed Wisconsin to navigate the tournament and end a 16-year drought of Frozen Four appearances.
The Badgers now move forward into the Frozen Four, attempting to complete a journey that began with a detailed analysis of their lowest point in recent history.
