Frontier Airlines is expanding its domestic network with new and resumed routes, including a recently launched nonstop service between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP). The addition, announced in late 2025, aims to provide more affordable travel options for passengers traveling between the Midwest’s two largest metropolitan areas.

The new route, first reported in September 2025 by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal, is part of a broader strategy by Frontier to increase its service across the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America. September 5th, Frontier announced the launch of 22 new routes, and subsequently announced an additional 23 routes set to launch in late winter and early spring today.

According to Frontier’s website, as of February 16, 2026, one-way fares from Chicago to Minneapolis are available from $37, departing on March 9, 2026. The airline’s website also lists fares for other dates, including $263 for a one-way ticket departing on June 18, 2026. These prices may require membership in Frontier’s Discount Den travel club.

The expansion comes as the airline industry continues to navigate fluctuating demand and economic pressures. Frontier, known for its ultra-low-cost model, is positioning itself to capture a segment of the market seeking budget-friendly travel options. The airline’s strategy relies on offering base fares and charging additional fees for services such as baggage and seat selection.

Beyond the Chicago-Minneapolis route, Frontier is also offering flights from Minneapolis-St. Paul to a variety of other destinations. Flights to Denver, Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix, and Orlando are currently available, with one-way fares starting at $19, $33, $33, $33, and $44 respectively. These fares, as listed on Frontier’s website, are based on recent searches and are subject to change.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul region has seen increasing demand for air travel, driven by both leisure and business travelers. The area’s robust economy, coupled with its cultural attractions and outdoor recreational opportunities, makes it a popular destination. The Mall of America, the largest mall in the United States, is a significant draw for tourists.

Frontier’s decision to add Minneapolis to its network reflects a broader trend among low-cost carriers to expand into secondary markets and offer direct connections between cities that may not be served by major airlines. This strategy allows them to compete on price and attract passengers who are willing to forgo some amenities in exchange for lower fares.

The airline is also actively promoting its Discount Den membership program, which offers exclusive fares and benefits to its members. The program, described on Frontier’s website, aims to incentivize travelers to book directly with the airline and build customer loyalty.

The launch of these new routes is expected to increase competition in the airline industry and provide consumers with more choices. However, passengers should be aware of the potential for additional fees and restrictions associated with Frontier’s low-cost fares. Careful consideration of these factors is essential when comparing prices and making travel plans.

Frontier Airlines’ expansion plans are not limited to the United States. The airline has also announced new routes to destinations in the Caribbean and Latin America, further diversifying its network and catering to a wider range of travelers. This international expansion is part of a broader effort to capitalize on growing demand for leisure travel in these regions.

The airline’s website highlights Minneapolis as a destination offering a vibrant music scene and outdoor activities along the Mississippi River, including Minnehaha Falls Regional Park. The city’s cultural attractions and proximity to natural landscapes are presented as key selling points for potential visitors.

While the airline industry remains sensitive to economic conditions and geopolitical events, Frontier Airlines appears to be pursuing an aggressive growth strategy, focused on providing affordable travel options and expanding its reach to new markets. The success of this strategy will depend on its ability to manage costs, maintain operational efficiency, and attract a sufficient number of passengers.
