FSB Reports Killing of Alleged Ukrainian Assassin in Crimea

Alleged Assassination attempt Thwarted
Russia’s Federal Security service (FSB) announced on Monday,August 21,2023,that its agents killed one Ukrainian national and arrested another in Crimea,alleging they were attempting to assassinate a senior Russian military officer. The FSB claims the operation successfully thwarted the plot.
According to the FSB, the deceased individual, allegedly recruited by Ukraine’s GUR military intelligence, was killed after placing an explosive device under the officer’s vehicle and engaging in armed resistance. The FSB stated the second man aided in the attempt.
State news agencies released video footage showing the body of the deceased individual alongside a hand grenade and an object positioned under a black sedan. A close-up of the object revealed electronic components, including a Verizon phone displaying the Ukrainian coat of arms and flag on its screen. TASS reported on the incident and shared the video.
The FSB described the device as a ”Western-made explosive device” in its official statement. The FSB’s official press release details the incident.
Arrest and Alleged Accomplice
The second man, whose identity was not released, was taken into pre-trial detention on charges related to aiding terrorist activity. The FSB identified him as an accomplice of Rustem Fakhriyev, a 40-year-old man alleged to be a GUR officer and the organizer of the assassination plot.
Video released by the FSB showed security agents arresting the second suspect at his home; his face was blurred,and he appeared elderly and needed assistance walking.
