According to the FTC, the company generated likely double-digit billion-dollar revenues by systematically driving up auction prices for search-result advertisements. Andrew Ferguson, the FTC chairperson, stated that these higher costs were largely passed along to American consumers. The agency’s complaint highlights internal corporate documents referencing a hidden surcharge.

Mechanics of the Alleged Bidding Manipulation

Sellers on Amazon pay for sponsored product placements that appear alongside specific search queries. These ad placements are traditionally decided through second-price auctions. Under standard rules cited by the FTC, a winning bidder pays only one cent more than the second-highest bid rather than their maximum offered amount. However, the regulatory filing states that Amazon collected the full bid amount from the winner in nearly four of every five product ad auctions. The federal complaint alleges that the tech corporation violated its own published auction rules because leadership grew dissatisfied with standard advertising revenues. Furthermore, the agency asserts that Amazon utilized fictitious auction participants to artificially drive up final placement prices.

Market Reaction and Legal Scope

Following the announcement of the legal action, Amazon shares dropped roughly 2.5 percent during Monday trading, according to market reports. A total of 22 state general attorneys joined the federal lawsuit alongside the FTC to challenge the platform’s advertising practices. The litigation proceeds in United States federal courts as regulators target monetization mechanics across digital retail platforms.
