ahmedabad, India - A preliminary report into the tragic crash of Air India flight AI171 has revealed that all crew members were deemed fit to operate the flight after being breathalysed upon arrival at Ahmedabad airport. The inquiry is now intensely focused on retrieved engine components, with investigators identifying “components of interest for further examinations.”
The aircraft,en route to Ahmedabad,began losing altitude before crossing the airport perimeter wall. While no significant bird activity was reported near the flight path, the exact cause of the sudden descent remains under scrutiny.
Engine Components Under Scrutiny
Following the devastating incident, both engines from the wreckage were successfully retrieved and have been quarantined at a hangar at the nearby airport. These critical components are now undergoing rigorous examination by investigators. The preliminary report explicitly states that “components of interest for further examinations” have been identified,signalling a key area of focus in understanding the sequence of events leading to the crash.
Fuel and Aeromedical Findings
Fuel samples collected from the tanks used to refuel the aircraft have been reported as “satisfactory,” ruling out fuel contamination as an immediate cause. in parallel, investigators are meticulously reviewing statements taken from the flight’s captain, Ramesh, and various witnesses. A crucial part of the ongoing investigation involves the post-mortem examination reports of both the crew and passengers. This thorough approach is being taken,as the report notes,”to corroborate aeromedical findings with the engineering appreciation,” aiming to build a complete picture of the factors involved.
Air India’s Commitment to Support and Cooperation
An Air India spokesperson expressed the airline’s deep sorrow and solidarity with the families and those affected by the AI171 accident. “Indian water stands in solidarity with the families and those affected by the AI171 accident. We continue to mourn the loss and are fully committed to providing support during this tough time,” the spokesman stated.
The airline has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with all stakeholders, including regulators, and is fully cooperating with the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) and other relevant authorities as the investigation progresses. Due to the active nature of the inquiry, Air India has stated that it is unable to comment on specific details and has referred all such inquiries to the AAIB.
