Engine Switches transitioned to “Cut-Off” Position, Causing Loss of Thrust
A preliminary report into the tragic crash of Air India flight 171 on June 12 has revealed that the aircraft’s engines briefly cut out seconds after take-off. India’s Air Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) stated that while the jet reached the necessary speed for lift-off, fuel switches for both engines later transitioned from the “run” to the “cut-off” position.
Cockpit voice recordings captured a pilot questioning the other about the engine status, to which the response was, “that he did not do so.” Even though the fuel switches returned to the “run” position moments later, the engines had already lost critical thrust.
Investigation Update: No Immediate Recommendations for Manufacturers
At this stage of the ongoing investigation, the AAIB has indicated that there are “no recommended actions” for either Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer,or GE Aerospace, the supplier of the plane’s engines. This suggests the inquiry is still in its early phases, focusing on understanding the sequence of events that led to the disaster.
A Devastating Loss: India’s Worst Aviation Disaster in Decades
Air India flight 171 crashed shortly after departing from Ahmedabad, bound for London Gatwick airport. The incident, which occurred on June 12, marks india’s most severe aviation disaster in nearly three decades and the deadliest for the industry in 11 years. The Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 impacted a medical college near the airport, resulting in the loss of 241 lives on board and an additional 29 on the ground.
This marks the first fatal accident involving a Dreamliner aircraft. The investigation is being jointly led by the AAIB, the UK’s Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB), and the US National Transportation safety Board (NTSB).
Looking Ahead: Ensuring Aviation Safety Standards
The findings from the preliminary report into Air India flight 171 underscore the critical importance of robust engine control systems and thorough pre-flight checks. As the investigation progresses, the aviation industry will be closely watching for further insights that could lead to enhanced safety protocols for all aircraft, especially the Boeing Dreamliner. The commitment to understanding and rectifying the causes of such catastrophic events is paramount to rebuilding public trust and ensuring the continued safety of air travel worldwide. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the complexities involved in aviation and the unwavering dedication required to maintain the highest safety standards.
