Fuglsang Announces Retirement at Giro d’Italia
Jakob Fuglsang, the accomplished Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Lombardy champion, has revealed that the current Giro d’italia will be his final race with Israel-Premier Tech. The veteran cyclist plans to retire at the end of this season, capping off a 17-year professional career.
The 40-year-old Fuglsang, a former Olympic silver medalist, announced his decision in a video. He noted that the Giro d’italia, where he supported GC contender Derek gee, would be his last Grand Tour and final race sporting Israel-Premier Tech colors. Fuglsang hinted at a possible appearance in August’s Tour of Denmark, but confirmed his retirement by year’s end.
“When I signed my last contract with the team last year, we agreed on a seven-month deal for me to be able to be part of our GC project with Derek,” Fuglsang said. “We started last year with the Dauphiné, and it’s been a super nice journey, but the seven months are coming close, and so are our GC ambitions here at the Giro d’Italia.”
Fuglsang emphasized his satisfaction with ending his career while still contributing to the team. “I’m happy that I can finish on a level where I can still make a difference, I can still be part of the race, still give something back to guys like Derek, and give something back to the team,” he said.
Throughout his career, Fuglsang secured 27 victories, including a stage win in the Vuelta a España, two Critérium du Dauphiné titles, and three Tour of Denmark wins. He also achieved notable Grand Tour results, including seventh in the 2013 Tour de France, tenth in the 2010 Vuelta a españa, and sixth in the 2020 Giro d’Italia.
“I’ve had a fantastic career,it has brought me more than I ever hoped for,” Fuglsang said. “But everything good comes to an end.”
Another veteran cyclist, Simon Clarke, also announced his retirement during this Giro. Clarke plans to retire in January after competing in the Tour Down Under and the Cadel Evans Grate Ocean Road Race.
