Stabbing Attack at Fukuoka Library Leaves Three Injured, Man Arrested

December 15, 2025 – A stabbing incident at the Fukuoka City Central Library in Japan on Sunday left three people injured, prompting the arrest of a 30-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder. Authorities responded to reports of a stabbing at the library in the early afternoon.

According to reports from TBS NEWS DIG and the Mainichi Shimbun, police were alerted to the incident around 1:30 PM local time. The victims – two women and one man – sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital. Details regarding the severity of their injuries were initially limited, but reports indicate at least one victim was seriously wounded.

The suspect was apprehended at the scene and is currently in police custody. Police have not released the suspect’s name but confirmed his age as 30. Investigators are working to determine the motive behind the attack.

NHK News reported that three individuals were taken to the hospital after the incident. Kyodo News and other Japanese media outlets reported that the injured man, who worked at the library, was stabbed after confronting the suspect in an unauthorized area and asking him to leave. The suspect allegedly stabbed a 27-year-old woman in the back in an elevator hall before fleeing, though this detail remains unconfirmed.

The Fukuoka Prefectural Police are leading the investigation. They have secured the scene and are gathering evidence, including interviewing witnesses. The library was temporarily closed following the attack, and its reopening date has not yet been announced.

Violent crime is relatively rare in Japan, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the world. However, there have been several high-profile incidents involving knife attacks and homemade explosives in recent years, as noted by the Independent.

This incident comes several weeks after a similar stabbing attack in Fukuoka near the Mizuho PayPay Dome. In that case, a 30-year-old man, Naoya Yamaguchi, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing two people. Investigative sources revealed that Yamaguchi had targeted members of the idol group HKT48, according to the Japan Times. He reportedly lay in wait near a staff-only parking area frequented by HKT48 members, and stabbed a 44-year-old staff member when asked to leave the area. Yamaguchi had purchased three knives in the days leading up to the attack.

While authorities have not yet established a connection between the two Fukuoka stabbing incidents, the proximity in time and location will likely be a focus of investigation. The Independent reported that both victims of the December 15th attack sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The Fukuoka City Central Library is a major public resource, serving residents and visitors alike. The attack has understandably shaken the local community. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available.
