Champions League: Gittens Leads Dortmund to Huge Win Over Club Brugge
English substitute striker Jamie Byno-Gittins led his German side, Borussia Dortmund, to a big win over Belgian club Club Brugge, including a brace in a 3-0 win in the first round of the European Champions League football competition.
The two teams played a good match, exchanging attacks and coming close to scoring multiple times until Benoit-Gittens scored twice in 10 minutes to seal the visitors’ fate. The Austrian international came on for Marcel Sabitzer in the 68th minute.
Benoit-Gittens put Dortmund ahead in the 76th minute after receiving a ball from international captain Emre Can, which he powerfully slotted into the net directly from the area, manipulating two defenders and shooting into the goal.
Another substitute, Guinea international Serho Gerasi, concluded with the third goal from a penalty kick that he grabbed himself after being fouled by defender Brandon Michel in the 90+5 minute.
Borussia Dortmund had the advantage from the start, with Dutch international winger Daniel Mallen almost scoring early on with an “on the fly” shot from close range, but the ball went wide of the far left post.
Club Brugge responded strongly and almost scored after a drive inside the area following a corner kick, where the ball was set up from close range for Nigerian Raphael Onyedika, and he shot it hard, but Swiss international goalkeeper Gregor Koppel cleared it.
Danish Andreas Skov Olsen hit a powerful ball into Koppel’s hands, while Adeyemi tested his luck with a second shot from a tight angle from close range, which was blocked by Mignolet.
Captain Hans Vanaken came close with a powerful shot from inside the area that went over the crossbar by a few centimeters, and Koppel saved his goal from a certain goal by deflecting Wetelsen’s creeping shot from inside the area into a corner.
The draw pits Dortmund against Spain’s Barcelona and compatriot Real Madrid, Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine, Scotland’s Celtic, Belgium’s Genk, Austria’s Storm Graz, and Italy’s Bologna, while Club Brugge will play England’s Manchester City, Italy’s Juventus, his native Milan, Portugal’s Sporting, and Scotland’s Aston Villa.
