The Shanxi Fenjiu team showcased its unique characteristics in the 2024 National U17 Youth Basketball League. Despite physical disadvantages, the team successfully qualified from the group stage by relying on active defense and team basketball.
Wang Xidong, the former head coach of the Chinese Men’s Basketball U17 Team, led the Shanxi team. He emphasized the importance of players’ minds, execution, and team awareness in modern basketball.
“For our team, I stress the fighting spirit, toughness, and execution ability. We must improve on these aspects and work harder on defense. I prefer defense and quick counterattacks,” Wang Xidong said.
The Shanxi team paid special attention to this competition. Wang Xidong described the players as “suffering a lot.” He adjusted the training schedule 20 days before the game to adapt to the game’s rhythm.
Wang Xidong has a rich coaching resume, having served as the head coach of many CBA teams and led many youth teams. He studies European basketball every year, observing and communicating with European coaches.
“European basketball focuses on defense, mainly because of excellent team defense. They add changes to overall defense based on personal defense. Chinese children’s physical condition is not bad, but they lack understanding and cognition of basketball. European strong teams emphasize players’ understanding of the whole during training,” Wang Xidong said.
Wang Xidong emphasized the importance of player character in selecting young players. “For example, Lin Wei, when I selected him, I mainly looked at his character. He is tough, determined, and capable of execution. He won’t let external situations affect his determination to win.”
Wang Xidong also discussed the cultivation of defender talents. “Cultivation takes time and requires a lot of games to try and accumulate. The coach’s philosophy is very important. If the coach likes the child’s offensive ability, he will mainly cultivate his offense.”
Wang Xidong believes that outstanding players must emerge through high-intensity and high-quality games. However, there are still relatively few such games, which is a challenge in selecting Chinese youth basketball talents.
“There is a saying called training through competition, which means that no matter how well you practice, if there is no accumulation of games, the players will not be able to understand it. You teach him some skills and tactics, but he doesn’t know what the situation is. When the time comes, you have to meet him in the game.”
Wang Xidong likes the “complaining” part of the players the most. Players get together to ”expose each other’s shortcomings,” which is a way to relax after training and games and adjusts the team’s atmosphere.
Wang Xidong emphasized the importance of players’ minds and spirituality in talent selection. “If a player has good brains and spirituality, he must be cultivated no matter how tall he is. I require players to master outside skills, because you don’t know what kind of performance they can play in the future.”
Regarding the future of the Chinese men’s basketball team, Wang Xidong hopes that through the joint efforts of many young coaches in China, they can cultivate more talents for Chinese basketball and get closer to strong teams in Europe and the United States.
