Armed Attack at Martyr Ömer Halisdemir High School Foiled by Gun Malfunction

A dramatic incident unfolded on Tuesday, September 11, at around 17:00, at Martyr Ömer Halisdemir High School in Güzelyurt District, Yunusemre. Sait Tan, a parent, allegedly threatened the school principal, Mustafa Örnek, over the phone, before arriving at the school in his car. Tan, who was reportedly angry that his 6th-grade child, AT, had repeated a grade, insulted the principal and called him to the garden.

As Principal Örnek descended the stairs, Tan pointed a gun at him. However, the gun jammed when Tan pulled the trigger. Undeterred, Tan attempted to shoot again, but the gun malfunctioned once more. After a brief period, Tan fired a shot in front of the school before fleeing the scene.

Fortunately, Principal Örnek escaped unharmed due to the gun’s malfunction. The incident was captured on the school’s security camera, providing crucial evidence for the investigation.

Police teams from the Manisa Provincial Police Department’s Public Order Branch Directorate and Intelligence Branch Directorate launched a large-scale operation to apprehend the suspect. Following a thorough investigation, Tan was found hiding in a residence in the Kuşadası district of Aydın. He was taken into custody after a nighttime operation and subsequently referred to court. The judiciary arrested Tan and sentenced him to prison.
