# French Adventurers Discover Meteorite Fragments in Moroccan Desert,Fulfilling a Lifelong Dream
Three friends embarked on an extraordinary 3,000-kilometer journey through Morocco, culminating in the finding of 25 rocky fragments believed to be from a recent meteorite fall. Driven by a lifelong passion for astronomy, Arnaud, a nursing professional, meticulously planned the expedition, blending adventure with scientific pursuit.
## The Hunt Begins: From Clermont-Ferrand to the Sahara
The adventure began with a drive to join Morocco, traversing Tamegroute and Merzouga before reaching Zagora after two days in the desert.Their ultimate destination: Ouarzazate, near Ait Saoun – the suspected impact zone of a recently observed celestial event. The challenging terrain demanded a robust 4×4 vehicle, which Arnaud painstakingly prepared alongside his astronomical studies.
“The trip asked for a hell of a readiness,” Arnaud explains. “It was necessary to develop logistics, develop the 4×4, study the configuration of the field, and ‘eat’ mechanics – an area that interests me but I am not a mechanic.” He dedicated an hour and a half each day for three years to planning, focusing on pinpointing the likely fall cone and impact zone to maximize their chances of finding meteorite fragments. Detailed map study and topographical analysis were crucial to navigating the remote landscape.
## A Witness and a Striking Encounter
On the ground, the team received a meaningful boost: a firsthand account from a local eyewitness. “He told us about the noise, the light, the agitation in the village which was bathed in a strong smell of sulfur. A great effervescence followed with the arrival of researchers from around the world to try to find fragments. We had an amazing chance,” Arnaud recounts. This testimony provided invaluable insight into the event and narrowed their search area.
Arnaud documented the entire expedition, creating a YouTube channel and Instagram account (@pmz_clermontois) to share their experiences. “I wanted it to be both a trip, an adventure, an experience in the field, while performing an educational and scientific approach on astronomy and the search for meteorites,” he states. He embraced video editing and social media marketing to broaden the reach of their scientific adventure.
## A Dream Realized: 25 Fragments and Expert Analysis
Fifteen days of intensive searching in the Ait Saoun region yielded a remarkable reward: the discovery of 25 rocky fragments. However, confirming their extraterrestrial origin required expert analysis. Arnaud contacted Maud boyet, a research director at the CNRS (French National Center for Scientific Research) specializing in magmas and volcanoes at the Clermont-Ferrand laboratory. Dr. Boyet graciously agreed to examine the samples.
“It was a kid’s dream to have our finds assessed. I am onyl a passionate, not a researcher. But living this was incredible. Maud Boyet even allowed me to touch moon dust!” Arnaud exclaims with palpable emotion. While the full analysis results are expected in September, the expedition has already proven transformative. Successfully completing the journey allowed Arnaud to achieve a classification of 6,848e, enabling him to pursue his desired specialty in psychiatry.
“I was advised not to undertake this trip before the clinical examination tests, finally it was among my best decisions. I arrived serene and relaxed,” he reflects. For Arnaud and his friends, the meteorite hunt wasn’t just a scientific endeavor; it was a journey of personal growth and a testament to the power of pursuing one’s passions – a journey that culminated in the extraordinary experience of touching a piece of the moon while searching for fragments of the stars.
