Studio Koba and Aeternum Game Studios have announced a partnership to develop Future Knight, a run ‘n gun action shooter designed to emulate the aesthetic and feel of classic LCD handheld gaming systems, such as Nintendo’s Game & Watch series.

The collaboration brings together Studio Koba, known for Narita Boy and Aeternum Game Studios, the developer of Eden Genesis. The title is scheduled for release on Steam, Xbox, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch in the summer of 2026.

Visual Direction and Technical Inspiration

Future Knight aims to bridge the gap between retro hardware and modern gameplay mechanics. The developers describe the project as a fusion of the nostalgia of LCD screens with the brutality of modern combat.

To achieve this, the art direction specifically replicates the visual characteristics of old LCD handhelds, utilizing pale pre-printed graphics and bold outlines to mimic the look of early electronic gaming devices.

Gameplay Mechanics and Narrative

The game is set in a retro-futuristic version of Tokyo and features eight distinct areas, including deadly sushi conveyor belts and dangerous construction sites.

Gameplay Mechanics and Narrative

Players control a robot hero constructed from the remains of a 1990s soap opera actor. The protagonist is accompanied by Two More, a benign tumor described as inexplicably powerful with a life of its own.

Combat requires more than standard shooting; players must strategically switch between the strength of Future Knight and the agility of Two More to defeat enemies, which include sentient piles of poop and bosses utilizing lethal combos.

The narrative is characterized as bizarre and unfiltered, incorporating social satire and dark humor. The plot centers on a mission to travel to the past, eight hours before a global apocalypse.

It is May 23rd, 1993. The Lady of the Past, leader of the “Present” pyramid scheme cult, has just washed her underwear and, incidentally, wiped the brains of all humanity. Only you, a robot built over 30 years from the remains of a ’90s soap opera actor, can stop her.

  • Xbox
  • PlayStation 5
  • Nintendo Switch

The game is categorized as a 2D action shoot ’em up, prioritizing a unique visual aesthetic that transforms the static nature of classic handheld consoles into a dynamic, frantic combat experience.
