Chinese Legislator Urges G20 Cooperation for Global Economic Growth
At the 11th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit in Cape Town, South Africa, a leading voice from China called for renewed commitment to multilateralism and collaborative problem-solving. Zheng Jianbang,Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s congress (NPC),led a Chinese delegation to the summit, held on Wednesday and Thursday, and delivered a keynote address emphasizing the need for global unity.
Addressing Key Obstacles to Advancement

He asserted that the G20, as a key forum for international economic cooperation, has a critical duty to stimulate global economic growth and foster positive past change. The G20 represents approximately 80% of global GDP, according to the official G20 website, making its role pivotal.
Principles for Inclusive Growth
The Chinese legislator advocated for a return to core principles of international relations: solidarity, cooperation, equality, consultation, and a prioritization of development. He specifically encouraged active participation in the global Governance Initiative, a framework aimed at improving global governance structures, and a commitment to making global development more inclusive and resilient. This initiative reflects China’s broader push for reforms within international institutions, as detailed in Council on foreign Relations analysis.
Strengthening Inter-Parliamentary Ties
Zheng affirmed the NPC’s commitment to strengthening relationships with legislative bodies worldwide, with the ultimate goal of building a community with a shared future for mankind. Beyond the formal summit proceedings, Zheng engaged in bilateral meetings with parliamentary leaders from South Africa, Russia, Singapore, Mozambique, and Germany to explore avenues for deeper inter-parliamentary cooperation. These discussions underscore the importance of legislative diplomacy in fostering international understanding and collaboration.
