G7 Summit Focuses on Ukraine, Middle east Amidst Russia Debate
Updated June 16, 2025
KANANASKIS, Alberta – The annual Group of Seven (G7) summit commenced Monday, with leaders grappling with escalating conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Discussions were further complicated by U.S.President Donald Trump’s assertion that excluding Russia from the former Group of eight was a misstep.
The G7, comprising Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the U.S., and the European Union, is meeting in Kananaskis, nestled in the Canadian Rockies. The summit is seen as a crucial opportunity to foster unity among democratic powers amid rising global tensions, including the Israel-Iran conflict. Discussions will address the global economy, trade deals, and China.
However, a U.S. official indicated that Trump would not endorse a draft statement urging de-escalation between Israel and Iran, signaling potential discord. Efforts to lower the G7 price cap on Russian oil are also facing hurdles due to recent oil price surges following Israeli strikes on Iran on June 12, according to diplomatic sources. Oil prices dipped Monday following reports of Iran seeking a truce.
Trump, alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, stated that Russia’s removal from the then-G8 in 2014, following its annexation of crimea, was ”a big mistake.”
“You wouldn’t have that war. You know you have your enemy at the table, I don’t even consider, he wasn’t really an enemy at that time,” Trump said.
Canada has reportedly abandoned efforts to produce a comprehensive communique, aiming to avoid a repeat of the 2018 summit in Quebec, where Trump withdrew U.S. approval post-departure. Draft documents on migration, artificial intelligence, and critical mineral supply chains are also under consideration, though none have secured U.S. approval, sources said.
Adding to the complexity, Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, suggesting Russia could mediate between Israel and Iran. French President Emmanuel Macron dismissed this idea, citing Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine as disqualifying it from such a role.
A European diplomat noted that trump’s suggestion highlights Russia’s continued presence in U.S. foreign policy considerations. “In the eyes of the U.S., there’s no condemnation for Ukraine; no peace without Russia; and now even credit for its mediation role with Iran. For Europeans, this will be a really tough G7,” the diplomat said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte are scheduled to attend the summit on Tuesday. European officials hope to leverage these meetings to encourage Trump to adopt a firmer stance against Putin. Macron stated the G7’s objective should be to converge on a robust and lasting peace for Ukraine, contingent on trump imposing tougher sanctions on russia. The summit aims to address these critical issues and find common ground among the member nations, focusing on Ukraine, the Middle East, and global economic stability.
What’s next
The G7 leaders will continue discussions on Tuesday, focusing on potential strategies for de-escalating tensions and fostering cooperation on key global challenges. The outcomes of these discussions could significantly impact international relations and economic policies.
