Gabriel: Grammy-Nominated Producer on Moving to Seoul & New Music “YDP”

by Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor

Seoul, South Korea – English producer and singer-songwriter Gabriel is preparing for a solo showcase in Seoul this Friday, , at Alive Hall near Hongik University. The performance, titled “One Night in Limbo,” comes on the heels of a Grammy nomination for his work on British trio FLO’s album “All Access Areas.”

Gabriel, who released his new track “YDP” in late January, will be joined by Min Jiwoon of SM Entertainment and a full band for the showcase. The event marks a return to solo work after a period of significant collaborative success, which includes contributions to albums by Dijon, Kehlani, Crush, and SUMIN.

The producer’s move to Seoul six months ago appears to have been a seamless transition, despite the often-demanding nature of the Korean entertainment industry. “Looking back, everything fell into place quite quickly,” Gabriel told The Korea Times. This swift integration followed initial contact with SM Entertainment in , when he submitted demos and was invited to their headquarters. A subsequent Instagram interaction with Crush led to a collaborative session, further solidifying his connection to the Korean music scene.

A pivotal moment in Gabriel’s relocation came with a publishing deal with Salpot Music Group, which he described as a “really fruitful partnership.” He acknowledges the fast-paced environment of the Korean music industry but finds it a positive fit. “Those I’ve crossed paths with here are enthusiastic and open to collaboration,” he said, contrasting it with experiences in Western music markets.

Gabriel highlighted a particularly rewarding experience working on Crush’s “UP ALL NITE,” recalling a productive studio session with collaborators CUBE and Devin Morrison where they completed 80 percent of the song in approximately three hours. The subsequent release event in Itaewon, filled with fans singing along to their creation, was a memorable highlight.

While continuing to pursue collaborative projects – including upcoming work with musicians Naji and CUBE – Gabriel intends to prioritize his solo material this year. He emphasized a deliberate approach to his personal work, stating that it “takes its own shape without forcing it into one,” and doesn’t necessarily follow current trends.

His musical influences are rooted in a diverse background, encompassing classical music, jazz, and artists such as Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, and D’Angelo. He also draws inspiration from personal experiences, finding that time spent in nature often sparks his most compelling songwriting. Despite now living in a major metropolitan area, he expressed a fondness for Seoul Forest and a desire to visit more frequently.

Gabriel describes his music as “heart-on-sleeve,” characterized by simple, warm production choices, minimally processed vocals, and direct, unambiguous lyrics. “Metaphor ruins a good melody. I just say what I mean,” he explained.

Reflecting on his decade-plus career, Gabriel acknowledges the lessons learned from past setbacks. “I’ve taken a lot of losses and learned a lot of painful lessons,” he said. “Now, when disappointment hits, it doesn’t hit so hard… Maybe my work is more light-hearted now for that reason.”

Looking ahead, Gabriel expressed an interest in experimenting with new sonic territories, specifically mentioning his fascination with hyperpop, and pluggnb. “I love hearing things that get me thinking, ‘How did they come up with that?’ I’ll strive for my own work to make me ask myself the same question,” he said.
