Yellow Swans Guitarist Gabriel Saloman Mindel Announces Stage 4 Cancer Diagnosis

Gabriel Saloman Mindel, guitarist and co-composer of the experimental noise-drone duo Yellow Swans, has revealed he is battling Stage 4 lung cancer. The diagnosis came after a health crisis last fall, according to a GoFundMe page established by his partner, Aja Bond.

Mindel is currently crowdfunding to help cover the costs of treatment. The GoFundMe listing details that funds will be used for “medical co-pays and bills, ongoing treatment costs, and supportive care,” as well as everyday living expenses.

In a statement on the fundraising page, Mindel expressed gratitude for any support he receives, stating, “Living in Minneapolis, I’m intensely aware of how much need there is—in the world and right outside my front door. I wouldn’t be asking for your help right now if I didn’t know it would truly make a difference in my fight. However you’re able to help, I’m so grateful.”

Yellow Swans gained recognition in the 2000s for their influential work in experimental American music, releasing acclaimed albums such as At All Ends and Going Places. The duo disbanded in 2009, with Mindel continuing to create music under the names GMS and Sade Sade.

In 2023, Yellow Swans reunited and have since been actively releasing new and archival material through Bandcamp. The band is also scheduled to perform a series of shows in Europe this month.

Upcoming Yellow Swans performances include:

  • February 13, Paris, France – Presences Electronique Festival
  • February 16, London, England – The Lexington
  • February 18, London, England – Corsica Studios
  • February 19, Brussels, Belgium – Bozaar Basement
