updated June 9, 2025
The summer anime season is heating up with the premiere of Gachiakuta on Crunchyroll, joining returning favorites like Kaiju No. 8 and Dan Da Dan. Based on Kei Urana’s manga, this new shonen series promises a darker edge.
Gachiakuta centers on Rudo Surebec, a teenager from the slums who is wrongly convicted of his foster father’s murder. He’s banished to The Pit, a massive dumping ground beneath the city. There, Enjin rescues Rudo and recruits him into the Cleaners, a group that fights monsters made of trash using weapons created from imbued objects.
Driven by revenge against those who cast him into The Pit, Rudo joins the Cleaners. Studio Bones, known for My Hero Academia, develops Gachiakuta. The series offers a stark contrast to the brighter tones of My Hero Academia, perhaps drawing viewers with its darker themes and social commentary.
The opening theme, “HUGs,” is performed by Paledusk, while Dustcell performs the ending theme, “Tomoshibi.” Advance screenings are scheduled for July 4 and 5 in the U.S., Japan, and Brazil. Details on locations are available here.
