A Story Roots in a Cuban Lifeguard and a Mexican Businessman
According to reporting from UnoTV and El Heraldo de México, “Hombre al Agua” marks García Bernal’s third fiction feature as a director. The story follows Camilo, a Cuban lifeguard played by García Bernal, who rescues a major businessman named Abel, portrayed by Jorge Salinas. In gratitude, Abel brings Camilo to Mexico, launching the character into a web of power relations, vote-seeking maneuvers, and economic interests. García Bernal explained in an interview with UnoTV that the concept has lived in his mind for a long time, noting that the process to generate initial scenes that eventually made the final cut began nine years ago. The filmmaker stated that he does not intend to offer a single reading of his work, preferring instead to confront audiences with different ideas so each viewer can construct their own perspective on the screen events.
Balancing Acting and Directing on Set
