Gaelcholáiste Mhuire AG in Cork City is poised for a meaningful upgrade with the approval of a major extension and refurbishment project under the Large Scale Capital Program. The investment will address long-standing capacity issues and enhance facilities for students learning through Irish.
Addressing Overcapacity and Boosting Northside Education
The project, welcomed by local representatives and school leadership, will provide much-needed space for 750 pupils.Plans include the construction of 25 new classrooms and two dedicated Special Education Needs (SEN) classrooms. This expansion directly responds to years of oversubscription, ensuring more students can access Irish-medium education on the northside of Cork City.
Fine Gael TD colm Burke highlighted the importance of the investment, stating, “this is a major boost for education in the northside and a big vote of confidence for both the school and the area.” He also acknowledged the dedication of Principal Donal Ó Buachalla, staff, and parents in bringing the project to fruition, and thanked Education Minister Helen McEntee for her commitment.A letter of intent has already been issued, signifying the selection of a contractor. The project will move to the construction phase once contract preconditions are met and formal authorisation is granted by the Department of Education. Burke emphasized the need for swift progress, stating,”We must not delay,at this point,in proceeding to construction.”
Modern Facilities to Enhance Curriculum and Student Experience
The expansion isn’t just about increasing capacity; its about enriching the learning environment. Principal Ó Buachalla explained that the school, built in 2002,has been “long outgrown” by the current student population. The refurbishment and extension will allow the school to broaden its curriculum, introducing new subjects and enhancing existing ones.
Specifically, the plans include provisions for new design rooms and multimedia rooms. These facilities will support the progress of crucial skills in science, coding, and digital media, providing students with a holistic and future-focused education.
“It will be somthing for our students to look forward to, state-of-the-art facilities being available on campus,” said Ó Buachalla. “We’re looking forward to developing for our students and providing a holistic education.”
Community Support and a Bright Future for Irish-Medium Education
The project has garnered widespread support from the local community. damian Boylan, a Fine Gael councillor for the Cork City North West ward and a past pupil of the school, expressed his delight at the expansion, stating, “As a Mon boy, I am delighted to see the school expand and the support the department is giving for the growth.”
Principal Ó Buachalla underscored the critical need for the expansion, noting, “We’ve been significantly oversubscribed for a number of years, so it’s great that we’ll be able to meet the needs of the students who want to attend and be educated through Irish on the northside of the city.”
The construction will be carefully managed to allow the school to remain operational throughout the building period. The investment represents a significant step forward for Gaelcholáiste Mhuire AG and reinforces the commitment to providing high-quality Irish-medium education in cork.
