Galaxy Phone Calling Card Feature Coming Soon
Google’s Calling Card: A Privacy-Focused Call Screening Feature
Table of Contents
Google launched Calling Card for android in 2023, offering users a privacy-focused way to screen incoming calls and share limited information with callers before answering. The feature aims to reduce spam calls and provide users with more control over their phone calls.
How Calling Card Works
Calling Card acts as an intermediary between callers and the recipient. When someone calls a user with Calling Card enabled, the caller doesn’t receive the recipient’s actual phone number. instead, they interact with a Google-generated card that displays basic information and prompts them to state their reason for calling. The recipient then sees this information and can choose to answer, decline, or send a pre-written response.
According to Google’s official blog post, the feature was initially tested in the US and Canada and is now expanding to more regions.
Privacy Benefits and Spam Call Reduction
the primary benefit of Calling Card is enhanced privacy. By masking the user’s real phone number,it reduces the risk of that number being sold or shared with spammers. This helps to mitigate unwanted calls and potential scams.
In a 2023 report by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), unwanted calls accounted for 29.3 billion calls, or 20.3% of all mobile phone calls. Features like Calling Card aim to address this growing problem.
Availability and Regional Rollout
Calling Card initially launched in the United States and Canada in july 2023. Google has since expanded availability to additional countries, including the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.
As of December 2023, 9to5Google reported that the feature was rolling out to users in the UK, France, and Germany through the Google Phone app.
Enabling and Using Calling Card
Users can enable calling Card through the Google phone app settings. Once enabled, the feature automatically activates for all incoming calls.Users can customize the information displayed on the Calling Card and create pre-written responses for common scenarios.
Detailed instructions on how to enable and use Calling Card are available on Google’s official support page. The support page states that Calling Card requires the latest version of the Google Phone app.
Future Development and Potential Enhancements
Google continues to develop and refine Calling Card based on user feedback. Potential future enhancements could include more customizable card options, integration with other Google services, and improved spam detection capabilities.
In a report by Android Police from November 2023, speculation arose about potential integration with Google Assistant to provide more intelligent call screening options.
