Galaxy Z Fold 7: Folded 200,000 Times – Durability Test
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Durability Test: How Many Folds Can It Really Handle?
Samsung’s galaxy Z Fold series continues to push the boundaries of smartphone innovation, but a lingering question remains: how durable are these foldable devices? A YouTuber is currently putting the Galaxy Z Fold 7 through an extreme test – manually folding the phone repeatedly to see how many folds it can withstand. And the results, so far, are captivating.
The Ultimate Fold Test: A Human-powered Endurance Run
This isn’t a quick flip test. We’re talking about a dedicated, ongoing livestream where a single person is meticulously folding and unfolding a Galaxy Z Fold 7, aiming for a staggering 200,000 folds. Yes, by hand. And no, we don’t recommend trying this at home unless you have a lot of patience (and nothing better to do for several days). Honestly, it’s kind of nice that the YouTuber is doing the hard work so the rest of us don’t have to.
How’s the Galaxy Z Fold 7 Holding Up?
As of writing this, the fold count has reached 113,368, meaning the youtuber is likely a day or so away from reaching the 200,000 mark.Samsung officially rates the Z Fold 7’s internal OLED panel for up to 500,000 folds under ideal conditions. Still, manually folding it that many times might take over a week and, frankly, test the YouTuber’s sanity. Aiming for 200,000 folds seems like a more reasonable, and revealing, target.
Checking in at Key Milestones
Along the way, the YouTuber is pausing at certain milestones to assess the phone’s condition. At 95,000 folds, everything appeared remarkably normal. The display was rendering colors accurately, touch sensitivity remained fully intact, and essential components like the speakers were functioning without issue. This is a great sign, demonstrating the initial robustness of the device.
Cracks and Creases: The First Signs of Wear
After hitting 100,000 folds, a subtle change was detected: a slight crackling sound began to emerge during opening and closing.Importantly, despite the noise, the inner display continued to operate flawlessly, without flickering or any visible damage. This suggests the phone is enduring the stress, even if it’s starting to protest a little.
Beyond 105,000 Folds: A Deeper Crease
By 105,021 folds, the screen was still fully functional, but the crease in the middle of the display had become noticeably deeper. While this is expected with repeated folding, the fact that the screen continued to function is a testament to Samsung’s engineering.
Will the Z Fold 7 Reach 200,000 Folds?
We’re optimistic. Samsung has substantially upgraded the Z Fold 7’s display durability with a 50% thicker Ultra Thin glass (UTG) layer on the inner display, designed to improve shock absorption. They’ve also implemented a new high-elastic adhesive that binds the OLED layers, offering four times the recovery performance compared to previous generations. a high-strength titanium plate provides additional backing and support to the screen. Considering these improvements, and the lab results previously provided by Samsung, we believe the Fold 7 should survive this grueling test.
However, it’s crucial to remember that this fold test is being conducted manually, not in the controlled surroundings of a laboratory. This means the results will likely provide a more realistic understanding of how repeated folding impacts the device during everyday use – with all the slight variations in pressure and angle that come with human operation.
