Teenagers Falling Prey to Online Gambling: A Growing Concern

Recently, there has been a surge in cases of teenagers becoming addicted to online gambling. Despite being easily accessible via mobile phones, there is no effective means to stop it, and it sometimes leads to crime to obtain gambling funds.

The Rise of Online Gambling Among Teenagers

Illegal sites offering free movies and dramas often display ads linking to online gambling sites, making it easy for teenagers to stumble upon them. As a result, the number of teenagers falling into online gambling is increasing.

According to the Sejong-Chungbuk Gambling Problem Prevention and Treatment Center, the number of youth counselors has risen from 17 in 2022 to 30 last year, and to 48 as of August this year, nearly tripling in two years.

The Consequences of Online Gambling Among Teenagers

The counseling ratio of high school and middle school students has decreased, indicating that the age of those affected is getting younger. This adds to the seriousness of the situation, as online gambling can lead to conflicts with those around you due to gambling money, or even crimes such as theft and fraud.

Joint Efforts to Eradicate Youth Gambling

The Chungbuk Provincial Police Agency, Chungbuk Office of Education, and Sejong/Chungbuk Gambling Problem Prevention and Treatment Center have joined forces to take action against youth gambling.

These organizations will jointly operate and support gambling prevention education and student guidance programs, as well as provide training to students, teachers, and parents.

The Importance of Parental Involvement

Experts emphasize that it is crucial for parents to understand youth gambling and pay attention to their children. By doing so, parents can help prevent their children from falling prey to online gambling.

Conclusion

Online gambling among teenagers has already crossed the line of danger. It is essential for parents, educators, and authorities to work together to prevent and address this issue.
