The release of this updated imagery has led to renewed speculation regarding a potential remake of the role-playing game, which originally launched in 2000. While Square Enix has not officially confirmed the existence of such a project, the use of the original designer for new visuals has been perceived by fans as a meaningful gesture that may hint at future plans for the title.

History of Remake Rumors

Speculation concerning a Final Fantasy IX remake first gained significant traction in 2021. This interest followed the appearance of the title on a leaked list of unannounced games discovered within the NVIDIA GeForce Now database.

Beyond a potential game remake, industry reports have previously pointed to an alleged pitch for an animated adaptation titled Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages’ Legacy. This series was reportedly a collaboration between Square Enix and Cyber Group Studios.

The proposed animated series was intended to be set ten years after the events of the original game. The narrative would have focused on the magical offspring of the character Vivi, specifically children named Mel, Doc, Thea, Fala, Luciola, and Koln. The plot involved these characters embarking on an adventure beyond the city of Alexandria after a mysterious affliction affected one of the group.

The status of this animated project is currently uncertain. Cyber Group Studios experienced financial difficulties and filed for bankruptcy in 2024.
