The era of affordable gaming may be drawing to a close, with console prices steadily increasing and analysts predicting further hikes that could see PlayStation and Xbox consoles reaching $1000. This shift marks the first time in history that console prices have risen over a generation, a trend fueled by factors ranging from global economic disruptions to the rising demand for computing power driven by artificial intelligence.

Recent price adjustments reflect this trend. Sony has already increased the price of the PlayStation 5 to $550, up from its initial launch price of $499. The updated Pro model now costs $789.99. The company has raised the price of physical games by $10 in the US, according to reports from April 1, 2026. Nintendo has also increased prices, with the Switch now retailing between $320 and $340, a rise from its original $299 price tag in 2017.

The AI Factor

A key driver behind these price increases is the escalating cost of components, particularly RAM and storage, due to the immense computing demands of artificial intelligence data centers. As reported by The Guardian, the surge in AI development requires substantial processing power, driving up demand and, prices for essential hardware. This means consumers are effectively paying more for gaming consoles to support the infrastructure behind AI applications, even those seemingly unrelated like AI-powered chatbots.

The AI Factor

“We are paying more for a PlayStation so that idiots can use ChatGPT to mislead people on dating apps – something is rotten in the state of gaming.”

While AI is a significant contributor, it’s not the sole factor. Global economic instability, including the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran, and widespread inflation are also playing a role in pushing up manufacturing and distribution costs. However, the AI component is particularly frustrating, as some argue it represents an unnecessary cost driver.

Xbox Also Facing Price Increases

The price hikes aren’t limited to PlayStation and Nintendo. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X, which launched at $499 in 2020, now costs $599. The Xbox Series S has also seen a price increase, moving from $299 to $380 (512GB) or $429 (1TB). Reports from November 2025 suggest that Xbox may be planning a third price increase, despite Microsoft’s strong financial position, potentially to avoid subsidizing unsuccessful ventures.

Analysts predict that consoles could reach $1000, transforming console gaming into a luxury market. This shift is occurring alongside a decline in console exclusives, further impacting the value proposition for gamers. Tom’s Hardware reported on this trend, noting the unprecedented nature of rising console prices over time.

PC Gaming as an Alternative?

For some, the rising cost of consoles is prompting a shift towards PC gaming. However, PC components have also been affected by the increased demand driven by AI, with Nvidia becoming the most valuable company in the world due to AI investment. Notebookcheck Magyarország reports that 899 euro gaming PCs can now outperform the PS5 Pro and Steam Machine in terms of performance, offering a potential alternative for dedicated gamers, though at a potentially similar or higher upfront cost.

The increasing prices are prompting significant backlash from the gaming community, marking a turning point in the industry. The traditional model of decreasing console prices over time is being disrupted, raising concerns about accessibility and affordability for gamers.
