Two new studies highlight the potential of “exergames,” playful training programs combining physical exercise with cognitive challenges, as a side-affect-free intervention for individuals experiencing early cognitive decline.

ETH Zurich and Eastern Swiss University of Applied Sciences Study
Researchers at the Federal Technical University of Technology Zurich (ETH) and the Eastern Swiss University of Applied sciences (East) have demonstrated that exergames not only provide enjoyment but also exhibit promising medical benefits. Unlike pharmaceutical interventions, exergames are free from adverse side effects.
The study involved approximately 40 participants with an average age of 73, all exhibiting initial cognitive impairments – an early indicator of dementia. For 12 weeks, participants engaged in training sessions five times a week, for 25 minutes each session, at home. The training utilized a system comprising a screen, specialized software, and a base plate that tracked their steps.
The tasks were designed to be both simple and challenging. Participants were required to mentally maintain a shopping list and respond with a step to the right or left, indicating whether a displayed product was on the list. This combined physical movement with cognitive recall and decision-making.
What This Means for Dementia Prevention and Management
These findings suggest that exergames could be a valuable tool in slowing cognitive decline and improving quality of life for individuals in the early stages of dementia. The accessibility of home-based training is a meaningful advantage, possibly reaching a wider population than traditional clinical interventions.
Further research is needed to determine the long-term effects of exergame training, optimal training protocols (duration, frequency, task complexity), and the specific cognitive domains most impacted by this approach. Investigating the potential benefits for different types of dementia beyond Alzheimer’s is also crucial.
