A newly observed gamma-ray burst (GRB), designated GRB 250702B, has defied expectations by emitting repeated pulses over an extended period, prompting astronomers to re-evaluate existing models of these powerful cosmic events.

What are Gamma-Ray Bursts?

Gamma-ray bursts are the most energetic electromagnetic events known to occur in the universe.They are typically associated with the collapse of massive stars into black holes or the merger of neutron stars. These events release immense amounts of energy in a short period, frequently enough lasting only seconds to minutes.

Historically,GRBs have been considered “one-and-done” events – a brilliant flash followed by a rapid fade. GRB 250702B, however, has shattered this understanding, exhibiting a prolonged and repeating pattern of emissions.

The Anomaly of GRB 250702B

On July 2nd, 2024, NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope detected a series of three distinct gamma-ray bursts originating from the same location. this initial observation was preceded by activity detected a day earlier by the einstein Probe. The unusual characteristic of this GRB was its persistence; rather of a single, fleeting burst, it pulsed repeatedly for over 24 hours.

“This GRB is ‘unlike any other seen in 50 years of GRB observations,” stated Antonio Martin-Carrillo, astronomer at University College Dublin, Ireland, and co-lead author of the study published in Nature. The extended duration and repeating nature of the bursts immediately signaled that something remarkable was happening.

Pinpointing the Source: A Distant Galaxy

The initial location of GRB 250702B proved challenging to pinpoint due to its position within a densely populated region of stars. Astronomers turned to the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile to overcome this obstacle. The VLT’s high resolution allowed them to precisely locate the source – a distant galaxy approximately 8.8 billion light-years away.

Andrew Levan,astronomer at Radboud University,The Netherlands,and co-lead author of the study,explained,”Before these observations,the general feeling in the community was that this GRB must have originated from within our galaxy. The VLT fundamentally changed that paradigm.” The discovery that the burst originated from such a vast distance further amplified the mystery surrounding its unusual behavior.

What Does This Mean? Potential Explanations

The prolonged and repeating nature of GRB 250702B challenges current models of GRB formation. Several hypotheses are being explored:

  • A Magnetar Flare: One possibility is that the burst originates from a highly magnetized neutron star, known as a magnetar. Flares from magnetars can release significant energy,and repeated flares could explain the observed pulsations.
  • A Collapsar with Intermittent activity: The conventional collapsar model, where a massive star collapses into a black hole, may need refinement. Perhaps the collapse isn’t a single event, but a series of intermittent collapses or instabilities.
  • A New Type of GRB: It’s possible that GRB 250702B represents a completely new class of gamma-ray burst, requiring a new theoretical framework to explain its behavior.

Further observations and analysis are crucial to determine the underlying mechanism driving this extraordinary event. The data collected from GRB 250702B will undoubtedly contribute to a deeper understanding of the universe’s most energetic phenomena.
