Gandhi Hospital IVF Success: Telangana’s Public Healthcare Boosts Fertility Treatment

Gandhi Hospital IVF Success: Telangana’s Public Healthcare Boosts Fertility Treatment

February 25, 2026 Dr. Jennifer Chen Health

In a significant development for families facing infertility in Telangana, government-run hospitals are increasingly providing access to advanced fertility treatments, including In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). A recent success story at Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad highlights this shift, with a 30-year-old woman delivering a healthy baby girl after multiple unsuccessful attempts at private fertility clinics. This case underscores the growing role of public healthcare institutions in offering affordable and effective solutions for infertility.

The woman, who had been trying to conceive for seven years, sought treatment at Gandhi Hospital’s infertility outpatient department in February 2025 after previous intrauterine insemination (IUI) attempts proved unsuccessful. Following a comprehensive evaluation, doctors initially attempted medical ovulation induction. When this approach didn’t yield the desired response, she was transitioned to IVF treatment.

The delivery, a lower-segment caesarean section performed on February 7, 2026, resulted in a baby girl weighing 2 kilograms. Due to prematurity, the newborn required monitoring in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) before being reunited with her mother under paediatric supervision. Both mother and baby are reported to be doing well.

This success is part of a broader expansion of infertility services within Telangana’s public healthcare system. IVF centres were inaugurated at Gandhi Hospital and the Modern Government Maternity Hospital (MGHM) Petlaburj in late 2024, offering a range of services from initial infertility evaluations to advanced assisted reproductive technologies. These two institutions have collectively recorded 190 positive cases resulting from a combination of ovulation induction, IUI, and IVF treatments.

Data from the hospitals reveal a substantial uptake in these services. Between the launch of the programs and January 2026, a total of 27,372 outpatient visits were recorded across both centres – 8,359 new patients and 19,013 review cases. Diagnostic procedures were also widely utilized, with 568 hysterosalpingography procedures (used to assess the uterus and fallopian tubes) and 14,033 follicular studies (ultrasound monitoring of ovulation) performed.

Medical ovulation induction was offered to 3,004 women, resulting in 159 pregnancies. Gandhi Hospital conducted 1,550 ovulation induction procedures with 56 positive outcomes, while MGMH Petlaburj performed 1,454 procedures with 103 positive results. Intrauterine insemination (IUI) was also a frequently used option, with 366 procedures performed across both hospitals, leading to 19 pregnancies – 2 successful IUIs at Gandhi Hospital and 17 at MGMH Petlaburj.

The implementation of IVF-related interventions was a gradual process. A total of 97 IVF stimulation cycles were completed, leading to 100 ovum pickups and 48 embryo transfers. These procedures resulted in 12 successful IVF pregnancies, with Gandhi Hospital reporting seven and MGMH Petlaburj reporting five.

The establishment of these government-run IVF facilities addresses a significant need in the region. According to officials, approximately 15% of couples of reproductive age experience difficulty conceiving. The availability of IVF treatment at Gandhi Hospital, and soon at Government Maternity Hospital, Petlaburj, and MGM Hospital, Warangal, provides a more accessible and affordable option for couples who might otherwise be unable to pursue fertility treatments. The IVF clinic at Gandhi Hospital was established at a cost of 5 crore.

Notably, the IVF services offered at these government hospitals are provided free of charge to all residents of Telangana. This commitment to accessibility is a key component of the initiative, aiming to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent individuals from pursuing their dream of parenthood. The launch of the Gandhi Hospital facility was described by Health Minister T Harish Rao as a “historic milestone” and an example for the nation to follow.

The expansion of these services also includes plans for training government healthcare workers in assisted reproductive technology. Experienced staff at Gandhi Hospital will be involved in training colleagues at district hospitals, further extending the reach of these vital fertility treatments throughout Telangana.
