singapore – A man wiht a history of violence has been sentenced to six weeks in jail for his role in a deadly brawl that erupted outside a popular Orchard Road hotel in August 2023. Visnu Suriamurthi, 28, pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to Mohammad Isrrat Mohd Ismail, 29, during teh altercation.
The fight, which took place around 6 a.m. on August 20th outside Concorde Hotel and shopping Mall, tragically ended with Mr. Isrrat’s death. He was stabbed multiple times by another member of Visnu’s gang, Asvain Pachan Pillai Sukumaran, 30, who is currently facing murder charges.
Visnu’s sentencing comes after a series of events that began with a night of clubbing. Visnu and his friends, many of whom were members of a secret society, were denied entry to Club Rumours at Concorde Hotel due to a previous incident where they had injured the club owner.
Mr.Isrrat and his friend, Muhammad Shahrulnizam Osman, 30, also former bouncers at the club and members of a rival secret society, arrived at the same time.tensions escalated when Mr. Isrrat began shouting insults at Visnu’s group.
A chaotic fight ensued, with both sides wielding knives. Visnu punched Mr. Isrrat at least twice, while Shahrulnizam slashed Visnu and othre members of his group with a bread knife.
As the brawl spilled onto the street, Mr. Isrrat and Shahrulnizam were pursued by Visnu’s group. It was during this chase that Asvain allegedly stabbed Mr.Isrrat multiple times, leading to his death.Visnu’s lawyer, Kalidass Murugaiyan, argued that Mr. Isrrat and Shahrulnizam were armed and had injured his client, mitigating the severity of Visnu’s actions.
district Judge Ong Luan Tze, however, took into account Visnu’s prior convictions for voluntarily causing hurt in 2022, urging him to reconsider his path.”You are still young… take some time to think about how you want your future to pan out, and after this case, to seriously consider not coming back to court,” Judge Ong said.
In addition to the jail sentence, Visnu was fined $2,000 for a separate illegal gambling offense.
This case is just one chapter in a larger story. Over ten men have been charged in connection with the fatal brawl, highlighting the dangers of gang violence and the devastating consequences it can have.
