Dublin, Ireland – A garda on duty was the victim of a shocking and unprovoked attack on Capel‌ Street in Dublin this evening, prompting ‌swift⁢ condemnation from political‌ leaders and a reassurance to the public that the threat has been neutralized.

Suspect Apprehended, City Safety Confirmed

Authorities confirmed that the⁤ suspect was arrested at the scene of‌ the incident. In a statement, a​ spokesperson for An Garda Síochána assured the public, ⁢”The public can be assured that there is no ongoing ‍threat to their safety in the city.” The injured garda is receiving full support and a range of welfare services ⁢will be extended to him when ​he feels up to it.

The incident drew immediate and strong reactions from across the political spectrum.

Taoiseach‘s Outrage and Call for Information

Taoiseach Micheál Martin expressed his deep dismay, stating,‌ “I am appalled ​by the shocking unprovoked attack on a garda on duty on Capel Street in Dublin this evening. My thoughts are with​ the injured garda and his colleagues at this time. I wish him a fast recovery.” He urged anyone with information to come‌ forward and contact gardaí.

Justice Minister’s Zero Tolerance Stance

Minister for justice Jim‌ O’Callaghan, who has been briefed on the “appalling” attack,‌ echoed the sentiment. “My⁢ thoughts are with the ​garda. And I wish him a full recovery.Attacks on our gardaí are unacceptable⁢ and will never be tolerated,” he said.

Tánaiste Highlights Unacceptability of ​Violence

Tánaiste Simon Harris described the attack as “appalling and utterly unacceptable,” emphasizing ⁣his thoughts ​are with the injured garda, his family, and colleagues. ⁤”There must and will be​ zero tolerance for such⁤ appalling acts of violence,” he added.

Sinn Féin Leader Calls for Zero Tolerance

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald called the attack ⁢”dreadful,” highlighting the bravery of the ​garda working to keep Dublin safe. “There must be zero tolerance for such disgraceful behavior,” she stated, wishing him⁢ a speedy recovery and commending the rapid response of his colleagues.

Niall Hodgins,vice-president ⁤of the Garda Representative Association,extended⁢ “heartfelt wishes” to the injured member. He described the incident as a “quite terrifying and unprovoked attack” and noted that the bravery of the garda and⁢ his colleagues prevented potentially far ⁤worse consequences.

Mr. Hodgins underscored the demanding nature of policing, stating that members “continually run towards situations that ⁢others ⁣must flee from.” ‌He emphasized, “There is never,​ ever,​ an excuse for being exposed to such acts of random violence. The attacks being visited⁣ upon our members is shocking and we will never accept that being ‍assaulted is being part of our​ job.” He concluded by calling for enhanced measures to create a safer working habitat for gardaí, reducing the risk of assault.
