The City of Toronto has scheduled a full weekend closure of the Gardiner Expressway from the Humber River to Spadina Avenue to conduct essential maintenance work, with the closure beginning at 11 p.m. On Friday, April 24, and expected to last until approximately 5 a.m. On Monday, April 27, 2026.

This planned shutdown is part of the city’s strategy to minimize long-term disruptions by consolidating work that would otherwise require multiple overnight lane closures into a single, efficient operation. City officials state that the approach allows crews to complete the equivalent of more than 30 overnight closures during this window, potentially saving drivers up to 150 hours of cumulative delay.

Maintenance activities during the closure include repairs to cracks and potholes, inspection and replacement of guard rails, bridge inspections, removal of loose concrete, repainting of lane markings, lighting system checks and repairs, clearing of catch basins to prevent flooding, and removal of debris, weeds, litter, and graffiti along the expressway.

The work is being carried out around the clock by road crews, engineers, and contractors from multiple city divisions and partner agencies to ensure safety and efficiency. Officials emphasize that conducting the work during a full closure allows for faster completion and better quality control compared to piecemeal nighttime operations.

City officials note that the closure supports Toronto’s broader infrastructure goals, including preparation for major international events such as the FIFA World Cup 2026™, for which Toronto is a host city. The expressway upgrades aim to ensure reliable transportation routes for visitors and residents during the tournament.

The Gardiner Expressway closure is weather-dependent and will be rescheduled if forecasted rain or other inclement weather conditions arise. Drivers are advised to plan alternate routes and monitor official city updates for any changes to the schedule.

A subsequent closure is planned for the Don Valley Parkway (DVP) from Highway 401 to the Jarvis Street ramp on the Gardiner Expressway, scheduled from 11 p.m. On Friday, May 8, until 5 a.m. On Monday, May 11, 2026, for similar maintenance purposes.
