Southgate Reflects on England Manager Role, Tuchel’s Criticism
Updated June 25, 2025
Gareth Southgate, now the fourth England manager to be knighted, following Walter Winterbottom, Alf Ramsey, and Bobby Robson, discussed the pressures of his former role. He admitted a sense of relief now that he no longer carries the weight of a nation’s expectations.
“Every hour of my day was thinking about how do I make England better, what’s happening with the players, how do we do things differently,” Southgate said, highlighting the all-consuming nature of the manager role. “Any leader of big organizations, you’re constantly thinking about how to do your job as well as you can.”
Thomas Tuchel succeeded Southgate after Lee Carsley‘s brief interim period. Tuchel has secured victories in all three of his World Cup qualifying matches. However,England faced a setback with a loss against Senegal at the City Ground earlier in June, resulting in boos from the crowd.
Tuchel, upon assuming his role, suggested that Southgate’s England lacked a distinct identity and seemed more concerned with avoiding defeat in Euro 2024 than striving for victory.
Southgate responded to Tuchel’s criticism by saying,”I don’t think it’s significant how I took it or what I think. I think what’s realy critically important is for me to give the team, the manager, the space to operate. I think that’s the right thing to do.”
He added, “I’ve had an amazing experience leading my country, but it’s time for them to take it forward now and I’ll be a fan at home supporting it.”
What’s next
Southgate plans to support the team from home as they continue their World Cup qualifying campaign under Tuchel’s leadership.
