Updated May 21, 2025
New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson has publicly affirmed his commitment to the team, expressing his desire to remain with the Jets for the long haul. This statement marks a shift from previous speculation about a potential trade request.
“I’m hopeful I’m a Jet for life,” Wilson said Wednesday, following the Jets’ open OTA practice. He added that he hopes “we get this thing rolling and that all of our best days are ahead of us.”
Wilson, eligible for a contract extension, revealed that preliminary discussions have occurred between his agent and the team. he is currently signed through 2026,with his fifth-year option already exercised. The Jets have indicated they want to secure their key young players with long-term deals.Wilson aims to make a strong case for his extension when negotiations intensify.

Despite posting career highs in receptions (101), receiving yards (1,104), and touchdowns (seven) last season, Wilson’s on-field demeanor and ambiguous comments about his future led to perceptions of discontent. Wilson clarified that his frustration stemmed from losing, not from unhappiness with the team itself.
Two key factors have contributed to Wilson’s positive outlook: the arrival of coach Aaron Glenn and the quarterback change, with Justin Fields replacing Aaron Rodgers. Glenn has emphasized Wilson’s importance as a foundational player, stating his intention to get Wilson the ball frequently.
The transition from Rodgers to Fields, Wilson’s former Ohio State teammate, is also a significant development.wilson expressed enthusiasm about reuniting with Fields, highlighting their strong dialog and trust.
“He trusts me. I trust him. We’ve got good communication. We speak to each other well. We know exactly what we’re thinking, and that’s so key,” Wilson said.
Fields, who signed a two-year, $40 million contract, has impressed the Jets with his quiet confidence. Glenn described Fields as “authentic,” emphasizing that he isn’t trying to be someone he’s not.
“He’s not trying to be the celebrity quarterback. He’s just trying to be himself,” Glenn said, alluding to Rodgers’ departure.
Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams addressed his social media post from February, where he expressed frustration with another rebuild year following Rodgers’ departure. Williams admitted the post was immature and driven by emotion. He is now optimistic about the team’s direction under Glenn and the new coaching staff.
“I definitely think it was an immature thing for me to do at the moment,” Williams said. “Out of emotion, out of frustration, it was definitely immature.”
Williams, a Jet as 2019, is eager to end the team’s playoff drought, which is the longest active streak in the NFL. He aims to change the narrative surrounding the Jets and establish them as a winning team.
“I’d like to change the whole narrative of the New York Jets losing streaks, the playoff streaks and different things like that,” Williams said.
What’s next
The jets will continue OTA practices, focusing on building chemistry between justin Fields and Garrett Wilson, and implementing Aaron Glenn’s vision for the team. The team hopes to translate the positive atmosphere into success on the field, ending their long playoff drought and establishing themselves as a contender in the AFC.
