NHL Commissioner Bettman in Minnesota: Owners’ Chatter, McDavid Suspension, and Expansion Talk

Minnesota’s Xcel Energy Center played host to an eventful night Thursday, with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman in attendance for the Wild’s clash against the Utah Hockey Club. Bettman’s visit came on his way to Seattle for a celebration of life honoring Azul founder David Bonderman, whom Bettman worked closely with during his time as an airline industry lawyer.

Bettman kept a respectful distance from Wild owner Craig Leipold, who, by rule, has no one sitting beside him in the owner’s suite. The night’s game, one of Minnesota’s poorest home performances of the season, might have made Bettman grateful for the extra space.

Leipold, however, received a subtle reminder about speaking off the cuff regarding Bettman’s future. After Leipold’s comments on The Sick Podcast/The Eye Test about the Board of Governors’ executive committee searching for Bettman’s heir, and subsequent elaboration to The Athletic, Bettman emphasized he wasn’t angry but understood the remarks might have been misinterpreted as news.

Addressing the media later, Bettman weighed in on Connor McDavid‘s three-game suspension for cross-checking Conor Garland:

  • "Cross-check to the face or the head has to be dealt with," Bettman said. "Every call is a judgment call, and it’s situational. The officials didn’t want to blow the whistle with 10 seconds left, potentially hurting the Oilers."

When asked about setting the upcoming season’s cap ceiling, Bettman reassured that doing so before the deadline is crucial for teams to plan:

  • "The discussion about the cap is ongoing… We’re working with the Players’ Association to ensure it’s done fairly and efficiently."

Bettman expressed optimism about the league’s relationship with the NHLPA, hinting that CBA negotiations could begin as early as February. On the topic of expansion, he stressed that the league isn’t actively pushing for it:

  • "We’re not dealing with issues of pushing or angsting… If someone comes in and says they’ve checked all the boxes, then we’ll look at it."

Regarding the playoff format, Bettman indicated no appetite for change, citing the NHL’s unpredictable first rounds and high-intensity games. Lastly, Bettman dismissed concerns about attendance issues at the 4 Nations tournament:

  • "Canada and the U.S. games are no issue, and there’s no issue on the other games… It’s tracking the way we would expect it to."

As for Bettman’s own future, he humorously acknowledged his age but wouldn’t be drawn into specifics:

  • "I won’t be doing this job forever… I’m just not going to ruin that (planning) by sharing the news with a lowly beat writer."

With that, Bettman left Xcel Energy Center, leaving Wild fans and the local NHL faithful hoping for better home form and an exciting season ahead.

While Bettman’s visit to Xcel Energy Center was brief, it underscored several key issues facing the NHL. The league is navigating sensitive situations, from addressing player suspensions and ownership dynamics to exploring expansion possibilities. The commissioner’s presence in Minnesota, amidst ongoing discussions about team performance and franchise stability, reinforces the league’s commitment to engaging with local communities and tackling thes challenges head-on.As the NHL moves forward, Bettman’s leadership and strategic vision will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the league’s future.
Gary Bettman’s visit to the Xcel Energy Center provided a glimpse into the ongoing discussions surrounding the NHL’s future. while Bettman’s presence alongside Craig Leipold’s recent comments about his successor have reignited speculation about a potential leadership shift, the commissioner emphasized his commitment to the league and downplayed any implied urgency. Meanwhile, the McDavid suspension underscores the NHL’s commitment to player safety and enforcement of rules, highlighting the delicate balance between protecting players and preserving the exciting, fast-paced nature of the game. Ultimately,Bettman’s visit to Minnesota served as a reminder that the NHL is a dynamic and ever-evolving league, navigating both internal conversations about its future and the very real challenges of upholding the integrity of the game on the ice.
