After losing his original medals in the Los Angeles wildfires,Hall received replicas of the 10 medals he earned across three Olympic Games. International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach presented the medals to the american swimmer at a ceremony in Lausanne.
Hall competed in the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic games in Atlanta, Sydney and Athens, securing five gold, three silver and two bronze medals. The devastating wildfires that swept through Los Angeles in January forced Hall to evacuate his Pacific Palisades home, leaving his prized possessions behind.
Bach expressed sympathy, stating the IOC was touched by Hall’s tragic story of losing his home and belongings.
“Thank you for the medals,” Hall Jr said. “Never before have 10 Olympic medals been replaced, probably because no one has lost 10 medals before… I will do a better job at taking care of these… The realisation through this process, that outweighs any sense of loss, is this word solidarity and what it means, which cannot be taken away.”
