Former England forward Gary Lineker has described Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent fallout with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus as sad, stating that the Al Nassr striker deserves an international farewell as beautiful as Lionel Messi’s final Argentina game. Ronaldo stated earlier in the week that he remains available to represent Portugal if called upon, but also claimed that Jesus had broken his word to him following a walk-out incident.
Lineker Urges a Proper Farewell for Ronaldo
Lineker, who scored 41 goals for England in 80 appearances, addressed the strained relationship between the veteran forward and the national team setup during recent media commentary. The former England international emphasized that the current friction will be forgotten over time.

He has done his kind-of apology. I just hope they get their heads together, give him a really good farewell. I just think it’s a bit sad because he’s been so great. And ultimately, in five years or ten years time, no one will remember this. It won’t matter. We’ll just remember how great he was. But I think if you look at Messi’s farewell, it was so beautiful and I think Cristiano deserves the same.

Ronaldo Alleges Broken Promises and Compares Himself to Legends
The dispute stems from events surrounding a news conference on Sept. 29, which followed Ronaldo’s walk-out. According to the Al Nassr striker, Jorge Jesus was supposed to make a series of pre-agreed comments during that media session.
During his remarks addressing the fallout, Ronaldo also compared his status in the sport to legendary figures Pelé and Diego Maradona. Despite the friction with the coaching staff, the forward has kept his international options open.

I have heard a lot about farewell matches, that I deserve a dignified farewell and that the wants to give me that opportunity,
Ronaldo said regarding his eventual departure from international football. I can promise all my fans, and especially all Portuguese people, that we will have one or more farewell matches. There will be time for that.
Federation and Coach Open the Door to a Return
While the friction between the player and the technical staff remains a talking point, leadership within Portuguese football has moved to ease tensions. The Portuguese Football Federation president characterized the situation as a misunderstanding.
At the same time, Jorge Jesus stated that the door remains open for the former Real Madrid, Juventus, and Manchester United forward to return to the squad for future fixtures should selection happen.
